What is the Flying Companion Course?

Do you often fly with a qualified pilot and would like to learn more to understand and be more involved in the experience? Do you lack confidence or feel anxiety about going flying?

The AOPA Flying Companion Course may just be the thing for you!

AOPA has designed this syllabus of instruction to increase the enjoyment, participation and confidence in flying of those who regularly accompany private pilots. It is conducted by a qualified flight instrtuctor and will give the candidate a much greater understanding as well as an ability to fly the aircraft in certain situations.

Course Content

Flying Training

The course consists of a minimum of eight hours dual flying with a qualified Flight Instructor conducted within a period of 12 months. The following topic are covered in the practical course:

  • Effects of Controls
  • How to use the Instruments
  • Aircraft Systems Monitoring
  • The Radio and Transponder
  • Circuits and Landings
  • Basic Navigation
  • Emergency Procedures

Theoretical Knowledge Training

The theoretical knowledge section of the course will consist of a minimum of ten hours of briefing/lectures given by a Flight Instructor at a level appropriate to the requirements of the flight training syllabus. Subjects covered include:

  • Air Law
  • Principles of Flight
  • Human Performance & Limitations

There are no tests required

The course culminates in a simulated emergency with recovery to an appropriate airfield and a safe landing. This is not conducted as a test.

Satisfactory completion of the course will enable the candidate to obtain the Flying Companion’s Certificate.
